This Westin is your standard American style hotel that doesn’t make you feel like you are in the Caribbean. As with most hotels on the Dutch side of the island, this hotel has no charm or unique architecture that makes it different than anywhere else. It is however still a Westin therefore most amenities are very nice with a first class staff etc. We stayed here because we belonged to SPG and was using points for a short stay before leaving for another island. The hotel beach, Dawn Beach, is just so so and not as nice as Orient Beach on the French side. The room was nice and we were upgraded to a suite but it was located in an odd corner so the view was very limited. If you like nice but predictable accommodations then you’d like it here.

Nice hotel with your standard Westin rooms and service and amenities are very good. However the location is not convenient to anything and the beach is just ok. If you want to see the true St Martin this isn’t an ideal base to explore. It’s best to stay near Orient Bay but if you’re with SPG or like to hang out with an American crowd then this might fit the bill. We were upgraded to a suite and it was very nice. There is a rental car service on site. One thing we didn’t like is the cabanas cost extra yet they don’t provide shade for their beach chairs.

I contacted the hotel trying to book my accommodations for a one-week stay. I had a couple questions about which rooms have which amenities so I used the customer chat feature on their website, and then called the number given to me by the chat rep. All in all, I talked to 3 different people, and every single one was comically unhelpful. My very first question was which of their rooms have kitchenettes - the website states that some do and some don't but when you are doing the booking, you can't tell. All 3 customer service reps told me that none of the rooms have kitchenettes, and when I asked how come their website says some rooms do, all 3 proceeded to argue with me, telling me that I was using incorrect words. Apparently, no one at Westin has any idea that people use the word "rooms" to describe a hotel room. In these people's minds, customers should know that if they want a kitchenette, they should use the words "suite" or "condo" because those come with kitchenettes while "rooms" don't. Needless to say, in addition to being utterly unhelpful, all 3 agents made me painfully aware that I was a Very Difficult Customer wasting my Busy Customer Service Representative's time! Can't let people book a $1k per night room without a side helping of humiliation, can we... oops, not "room" - "suite" or "condo". Sorry Westin, I am just a dumb, unedumacated customer! *** Update *** I got the information I needed from my travel agent and I am not happy. The room rate for January 2016 is $972 per night and it does not even include their "resort fee" - $20/day per person - or their kids club - $40 for half day or $70 for full day. First, if you are charging a cool $1k per night for a small one-bedroom, don't nickel and dime, just include the damn resort fee! Second, I have never EVER heard of a resort charging extra for kids club. That's just... insulting. I guess Westin wants to be the Ryanair of resorts - next year, they will be charging the check-in fee and the bathroom access fee. Ugh. *** Second Update *** I have to post an even worse update after actually visiting St. Maarten and staying at a private condo next to the Westin. 1) Apparently their Kids Club is a lie. It's only open if enough kids sign up... but guess what, they don't accept advance reservations, so it's never open. (Yes it is as absurd as it sounds - you are told that it's only open if enough kids sign up and that there is no way to sign up by the same person in the same phone call). FYI we visited for a week in January and it wasn't open a single day so clearly it's not an issue with low season or an off day. 2) Their Casino is also a lie. It's just a small area next to check-in and there are never really any staff or customers there so it's as "available" as their Kids Club. 3) The local staff is as unpleasant as the phone staff. We reserved their bus to go into town and were lectured by a hostile person on how we better not be late - only to wait for over an hour (!) in the lobby, while they kept rolling their eyes at us because how dare we lose our patience or mention that we were scolded to be on time (I don't mean us personally, it was about 20 passengers waiting for the bus and we were all scolded equally). It's just unbelievable to me that a high-end resort could fail on so many levels. I highly recommend that you rent one of the condos at the Coral Beach Club next door - they are half the price and twice as nice at the same location on the same beach (Dawn beach). While The Westin was charging $500 per night for a studio without a kitchen, we booked a huge two-bedroom two-bath condo with a kitchen next door for $350 per night.

Was there for Irma, lovely prior to the storm and the employees were super warm and hospitable. However, the management was not prepared to handle a storm of this nature and assured us that they were. They had no plan in place and we had bare minimums living in the dark for 4 days with no flashlights provided or evacuation process in place. Nor did our loved ones have any updates or were able to find out if we were ok. If your going to stay open for Hurricane season then you should have been prepared and had the proper necessities for your guests.
